In honour of #TGIF we thought we’d mix something to do with a bit of fantastic design by previously-featured Jamie Clarke. We’ve talked about Jamie’s typography and his commitment to his craft before, and you can see our blog post on his Brighton tribute here, but with the weather being as blue as it is, we thought Jamie’s other tribute, this time to Exmouth Market in London, was appropriately thortful.

As detail-oriented as ever, Jamie has managed to convey Exmouth Market’s 400-year history in one image, by incorporating no less than 40 motifs and landmarks unique to it in his lettering. We have to commend Jamie on his incredible patience and dexterity. You should too – on his website, or if you prefer social, try twitter or instagram.

Our Thortful Image of the Day to wrap up the week is more quirky photography by Davide Luciano, because when was the last time you saw a crab playing a game of mini-pool? Seriously, if you want to check out Davide’s portfolio, be prepared to see the most ordinary things (and beings) in life, in extraordinary situations. Highlights include a pig with a cigar, an alligator (or crocodile) playing solitaire, and sheep hairdressing.

Jokes aside, though, Davide is an exceptionally talented photographer and we’re huge fans of his work at Thortful HQ, if we hadn’t already made that clear. We’re not the only ones to notice; the New York Times have featured him again and again, and it’s easy to see why. As well as throwing you off your game, and sometimes making you laugh, Davide’s work can be a biting social commentary, and when you notice this, the juxtapositions suddenly makes sense. See more at his personal website, or connect with him on twitter.

d7282bb89c520ce8e68f4bd5e345a323If this looks familiar to you, it’s because we recently feature Gaby D’Alessandro’s stunning Darwinian image of the day, and both the images are incredibly similar. Last time, Gaby created an illustration centred on the foliage and greenery of the Galapagos Islands for Nautilus magazine, which you can see right here. This time around, she drew Erich Jarvis (an avian scientist, if the image was above wasn’t a dead giveaway) for Duke Magazine.

We were so enamoured by Gaby’s detailed, distinguished style that we had to feature both illustrations. For more illustrative inspiration, see Gaby’s behance portfolio, or see her website, twitter or instagram to connect.

If you love the idea of Duff Beer, Patriot Ale or Butterbeer, you’ll love La Mix Tape Ale. Okay, we can’t really attest to that because we’ve never tried it, but we can confirm that you’ll 100% love Miriam Muñoz’s branding for La Mix Tape. We’ve featured her illustrations for Club Siroco before (you can see them here), but we noticed Miriam created this whimsy, 90’s inspired branding and we had to shout about it. Made in collaboration with beer brand Dawat and La Tape restaurant is Malasaña, Spain, Miriam says this particular ale is perfect with Tapas.

We think what it embodies most of all is Miriam’s clever, nostalgic and colourful approach to design. See her personal website here, see her instagram here or connect with her on twitter to congratulate her!

Our Thortful Design is here to brighten up your midweek, mid-afternoon! If you think this excellent gif work is familiar, it’s because we’ve gushed about its creator before. Fabrizio Morra (whose contribution to the 36 Days of Type challenge can be found here), is an excellent Italian creative. Previously we blogged about his commissioned, professional design work, but today we’re going to talk about something for the movie buffs in us – Fabrizio’s movie review blog.

Featuring every smash from Jurassic World to the Ted 2, Fabrizio’s blog-come-online-zine, which is co-run by Camilla Gazzola, is host to numerous gifs like the ones above (Inherent Vice and The Imitation Game), and portraits of a number of auteurs. It’s a film-lover’s dream. Check it out here, then connect with Fabrizio on instagram or behance!

We spent some time coming up with names for what we might call “Cinematic Wednesdays” or something of the like, but we’ll spare you, and tell you straight: we’re missing the silver screen today at Thortful HQ. What says that better than today’s Image Of The Day? To kick off midweek, we thought we’d feature the lovely David Ella again.

Whereas last time we had David on the blog, we had a music themed image (Jay-Z, to be specific – you can see it here), this week you can see his ethereally beautiful portrait of Scandal’s Kerry Washington. David’s distinguished style and practised hand is evident in both portraits – but which one is your favourite? Tell us, or even better, tell David at his behance page, or let him know on twitter.

this_is_meIt’s time for a little more of Maria Suckert this Monday at Thortful HQ! Last time we featured Maria for Thortful Design (her brilliant comic on cellulite can be found here), we said we couldn’t decide what to pick from her extensive and hilarious body of work, and that’s as true now as it ever was. So, we thought we might feature Maria’s illustrative introduction to herself. What we really want to do is pay homage to her whole portfolio, but we have limited space, so we absolutely beseech you to check out Maria’s genius personal website, behance, or facebook. Or better yet, all three.

#ImageOfTheDay

2c6613be8deaf514d6c4f837acc8499cAll typographers and design nerds are familiar with this sentence. A few of us might even say it’s a daily mantra in our lives; how many times must it have been written out during the conceptualisation of a new font, a new doodle? When we saw Oscar Cobo had created a poster for “The Quick Brown Fox jumps over the Lazy Dog” on his Behance page, we loved it immediately. It’s meta, smart and vaguely reminiscent (somehow) of art deco design. How thortful! Make sure you congratulate Oscar his excellent skills at his portfolio, or peruse his work further at his instagram.

Following on from our #MondayMotivation post featuring Efless a.k.a. Fran (you can see the post here), we thought we’d feature an equally inspiring and thortful, but very different body of work, this time created by Christian Mugisha. A Kigali, Rwanda based art director and graphic designer, Christian has honed his skills for five years to create work that would look very much at home on a billboard. In fact, it would probably be a welcome respite from the regular designs we see on billboards in the middle of London!

As well as art direction and graphic design, Christian also an animates and practises digital illustration. To see the best of his work, check out his Behance page here.

Those who follow us on social media will know that we are in love with Francisco Valesco’s work, and tend to share it on memorable occasions – you can see we did so for exam results days for young people in the UK this summer. We thought Fran would be the perfect creative to feature for a combined #ImageOfTheDay and #MondayMotivation post, but as usual, we couldn’t pick just one image!

Fran’s work has personality, is inspiring, and smile-provoking, so we urge you to check out his Behance page and his personal website. He has a particular knack for choosing the right words and giving them back to us in beautifully simple, shareable form. Based in Spain, Fran is a multi-talented designer, and recently spoke on his Instagram about how he’d like to take the above quotes and publish a book through a kickstarter campaign. We’ve got to say, we’d be first in line to buy it! As Fran would say: go big or go home.
