How We Protect Our Creators’ Work

Copyright image for blog

Copyright and copyright theft is something that thortful takes very seriously! We know how hard you work to come up with those fabulous designs, so we want to help you make sure they’re in safe hands and aren’t liable to being downloaded, copied or ripped off 🙂 Here we run you through all the ways in which we strive to protect your work!

All of the images you upload are stored in their original format in a secure location. (It’s top secret – we cant even mention it here!) We then create five – yes, five! – different versions of the original design at a lower resolution and higher compression level, to be displayed in our mobile apps and on our website. Of course, the resolution used will depend on the device & screen resolution: the image used for an iPhone 4 is a much lower resolution than the image needed for an iPhone 6, but the main thing is that these images are not of a high enough quality to be printed at card-size.

The only time the original high-res image which you upload is used, is over the secure connection to our printers, when a card is ordered.

We have also made sure to disable the ability to right click on an image and save it, to prevent those sneaky people with ulterior motives from copying creators’ designs!

Our technical team are currently working to further reduce the quality of the image that we display on our website and apps too: our aim is to ensure the customer buying the card is satisfied with the quality of the image used (so that they’re still keen to buy your card!), but still restrict the ability of someone to copy a high quality image. The good news is that as it currently stands any image would be pixelated if printed directly off the website 🙂

Here at thortful we like to go the extra mile too, so we are also looking to implement a service called Tineye, which is a piece of software that checks all cards uploaded to our platform and informs us if these cards are displayed anywhere else on the internet. This service carries out a search on the web to see if any of our cards are being marketed and sold anywhere else, and therefore ensures that we do not sell work that belongs to someone other than the creator who uploaded it.

Hopefully you’re satisfied with the measures we’ve taken to ensure your designs are protected, but we’re always open to suggestions on how we can improve. Send us your feedback to team@thortful.com and we’ll do our best to make thortful a safe and secure space for you and your work!

Summer colour trends spotted in our card designs

Hello sun, Summer is officially here! In honour of this wonderful time of year, we’re paying tribute to the trending seasonal tones of 2016 that have managed to sneak in to our bespoke collection of greeting cards.

“Colours this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.” Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute) hit the nail on the head when describing this season’s colour palette that transcends cultural and gender norms. We always knew our designers were ahead of the curve!

Our Very First #thortfulillustrates Design Brief!

Psssst… In case you didn’t know, one of our original thortful creators Jon Higham teaches illustration to the rather lucky students of Sussex Coast College, Hastings! In aid of givingsomething back, a little while ago, thortful decided to team up with Jon and his students to give them a shiny new project: to design some AWESOME greeting cards!

Students brief

Eager-faced and pencils in hand, ten budding illustration students all arrived at the thortful office to receive a live briefing this week, and we want to share some insider info on what we told them!

The brief was to design three cards, for three of the top-selling occasion categories across the industry: Birthday, Thank You and New Home. With this in mind, we gave them some top tips on how to create fantastic (and most importantly!) commercial cards. Check out this informative guide we created:

7 Emerging Graphic Design Trends Taking Over 2016

Have you noticed some consistencies in the dazzling world of design this year? With our friends at Canva, we’ve put together a list of our favourite trends to make sure you stay inspired to push your creative boundaries!

1. Mod-Retro

Retro no longer means the 1900’s era! Meet “mod-retro” coming to you live from 2016. Mod-Retro is all about the use of late 80’s-90’s retro patterns, tech and pixel graphics.

2. Material Design or Flat 2.0

Googles definition of the design principal: “deliberate colour choices, edge to edge imagery, large scale typography and intentional white space”. The term “Flat 2.0” is also being thrown around because it’s pretty much an update to the flat design trend with the addition of light/shadow, depth and movement to create a sense of realism.

3. Vibrant Hues

Saturated tones are flooding the design world to create richer, brighter creative pieces. Don’t be afraid to neon-up-it!

4. Custom Illustration

Stock is dead! One of a kind designs and illustrations are the in-thing, creating personalised and relatable outputs.

5. Blend Positive and Negative Space

Create deeper meaning to designs and instigate an optical illusion through the interaction of positive and negative space.

6. Dramatic Typography

Make a statement with big, bold, centre of attention type. Colour, texture and arrangement are your best weapons.

7. Deconstruction and Distortion

Shake up recognisable forms through abstract in a minimalistic style.

Halloween illustrations by James Boorman

Halloween illustrations by James Boorman

We’re just a day before the Halloween celebration and even if you’re not planning a theme party, you can still enjoy the spooky atmosphere. James Boorman inspired us to dedicate this post to Halloween, with his illustrations being exactly what you need these days.

How is James inspired from Halloween then?

For us Australians, Halloween isn’t particularly celebrated the way it is in other countries, but for me, it’s an opportunity to regain that fun, warm sense of community that we grew up with and reintroduce ourselves to our surrounding neighbourhood. These days, this sometimes feels a little lost and we tend to keep to ourselves. Read more

It’s always inspiring to re-discover the world through the eyes of a creative person, and we’re excited to come across so many incredible people through social media.

According to Edward de Bono, “creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

This quote perfectly applies to the case of Carlo, or else @finnanofenno on Instagram, a creative person that uses his imagination in the most unexpected ways. Read more

Neither Tuesday, nor rain are bringing us down, especially when we admire the creativity of artists from all backgrounds. Today we’re featuring the work of Ryan Close, also known as Casbah*, and his Cityscapes project, reminding us how impressive (and inspiring) big cities may be.

‘Cityscapes’ is a personal project of Ryan, more like an experimentation with some plugins, while adding a creative atmosphere. Read more
