We spent some time coming up with names for what we might call “Cinematic Wednesdays” or something of the like, but we’ll spare you, and tell you straight: we’re missing the silver screen today at Thortful HQ. What says that better than today’s Image Of The Day? To kick off midweek, we thought we’d feature the lovely David Ella again.

Whereas last time we had David on the blog, we had a music themed image (Jay-Z, to be specific – you can see it here), this week you can see his ethereally beautiful portrait of Scandal’s Kerry Washington. David’s distinguished style and practised hand is evident in both portraits – but which one is your favourite? Tell us, or even better, tell David at his behance page, or let him know on twitter.

2c6613be8deaf514d6c4f837acc8499cAll typographers and design nerds are familiar with this sentence. A few of us might even say it’s a daily mantra in our lives; how many times must it have been written out during the conceptualisation of a new font, a new doodle? When we saw Oscar Cobo had created a poster for “The Quick Brown Fox jumps over the Lazy Dog” on his Behance page, we loved it immediately. It’s meta, smart and vaguely reminiscent (somehow) of art deco design. How thortful! Make sure you congratulate Oscar his excellent skills at his portfolio, or peruse his work further at his instagram.

Those who follow us on social media will know that we are in love with Francisco Valesco’s work, and tend to share it on memorable occasions – you can see we did so for exam results days for young people in the UK this summer. We thought Fran would be the perfect creative to feature for a combined #ImageOfTheDay and #MondayMotivation post, but as usual, we couldn’t pick just one image!

Fran’s work has personality, is inspiring, and smile-provoking, so we urge you to check out his Behance page and his personal website. He has a particular knack for choosing the right words and giving them back to us in beautifully simple, shareable form. Based in Spain, Fran is a multi-talented designer, and recently spoke on his Instagram about how he’d like to take the above quotes and publish a book through a kickstarter campaign. We’ve got to say, we’d be first in line to buy it! As Fran would say: go big or go home.

Today’s Image Of The Day is more of an excuse to post Nicolas Mardones’ portfolio, but also to share the motivation for the weekend – we’re all close to wrapping up the week. We have some incredible stuff lined up for the coming weeks here at Thortful, so we thought we’d take this moment of rest to indulge in the simplicity of Nicolas’s instagram, which is full of incredible calligraphy and hand lettering.

It’s pretty common knowledge that watching koi fish is so therapeutic because we, as human beings, love watching the figure 8 formed continuously, which is why it’s so calming to watch typographers work and why handlettering videos are so shareable. Well, Nicolas’s instagram is the jackpot for videos on calligraphy; short, sweet, and likely to give you a perfect push into the weekend. You can see all the action here.

10402850_547459422032077_7338554576390374430_nIt was very difficult to pick just one item from Marc Fernandez’s wonderful and crisp portfolio, so we picked everyone’s favourite sci-fi character! Well, not everyone’s, but you see our point? We think what sets Marc’s portfolio aside, and what makes it so thortful, is its diversity. A strong identity is an important thing to have as a creative, but versatility is also key, as Marc demonstrates on his behance page.

Having played with every medium in his work including illustration, calligraphy, graphic design, hand lettering and printing, Marc showed not just excellent design acumen and the great ability to curate a stylish collection of images, but also the ability to motivate himself and grow as a creative. We love it! You can see Marc’s instagram here.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 09.58.47Finally, a playful image of the day! We do love our images to be as thortful as possible, whether wry, conscientious or otherwise, but sometimes you’ve just got to have a monkey around.

The ape above was illustrated by the lovely Lydia Perez in 2012 (as you can see) as a backpack design for the Sprayground Contest. In case you hadn’t heard, the Sprayground Contest involves putting a backpack (preferably one you’ve designed) on a government statue, snapping a picture and sending it in to Sprayground. We think this is a cool, tongue-in-cheek-way to create content, and we’re ever so grateful to Sprayground for bringing talented young illustrators like Lydia to our attention.

Lydia has worked at Ogilvy & Mather in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, and hails from there originally, which is something you can definitely see in her warm, bright work. Take a look at her behance page here.

Sunny-Gu_Summery-Gems_California-Sunshine5_1000

Today’s #imageoftheday is the rare kind of illustration we haven’t featured before – the fashionable kind. We can’t get enough of Sunny Gu’s hugely intricate illustrations based on her love of an unusual (but completely logical) combination of hot summers and amazing jewelry. The “Summery Gems” series comes in four variations: Into the Wild, California Sunshine (above), Palm Tree Dreams and Flamingo Love. If you love fashion and design with a warm, vibrant palette and a Studio 54 vibe, see more at Sunny’s personal website.

As a sidenote, know that Sunny is an authentic California-based illustrator (originally from China), and has been commissioned by a wide range of giants across the fashion magazine, design and cosmetic industries: Condé Nast Publications, Vogue, InStyle, Elle, Versace, D&G, Carolina Herrera, Shiseido and Neutrogena to name a few. Connect with her on twitter or instagram if you loved her portfolio.

AB-MADMEN-FULL_760

There comes a point part way through the summer where we almost wish the sunshine would go away so that the Autumn TV schedule would come back. We’re in one of those moods today at Thortful Headquarters. As such, our Thortfully designed image of the day is a poster by Alexander Bielovich promoting – you guessed it – Mad Men. We can’t quench our thirst with anymore Mad Men, so we might as well stare wistfully at one of the better meta-esque posters it inspired, eh? (If you like it, stick around for more fan-art-based design later on today, though that one’s for the bookworms.)

We digress! Alex is a graphic designer, illustrator and typographer based in Durban, South Africa. He’s done it all, including design work for Nestlé, branding for local companies, creating his own typeface, and just generally curating a lovely, current portfolio which you can see here. You can also connect with him on his instagram or see his inspiration on tumblr.

Print and motion: two integral and very important parts of the design community that ofter neglected because one seems a little too forward, and the other a little too past it. It is true, both are difficult to execute, but Frederico Landini of I Depend on Me, manages to do fantastically well at keeping his design as fresh as though he’s discovered the medium. And that’s why we’ve decided to feature him for #ImageOfTheDay, of course, here at Thortful HQ!

A graphic designer and branding specialist based in sunny Florence, Frederico started his professional career as an engineer, which led to incredibly cool projects like designing fonts in Microsoft Excel ’97 and creating print-based illustration for everything from window displays in Hoxton to identity for local culture festivals. Make sure you check out his Behance page, his Facebook and his personal website to connect.

Again, we couldn’t pick one single image for #ImageOfTheDay at Thortful HQ. Following on from yesterday’s low-fi typography by Lydia Stutzman, we thought we’d feature another creative whose work looks equally effortless, but is probably the result of years of talent put into practise. Mumbai-based designer Shruti Thakkar’s instagram is full of motivational, funny and charming content – and all of it would look brilliant on our platform.

Creatives like Shruti and Lydia prove that it’s not always highly processed ‘art’ that is valuable; sometimes what comes off the top of our heads has just as much substance, if not more, no matter which corner of the globe you’re in. Shruti’s instagram can be found here, and is a veritable treasure trove for illustration and lettering-lovers alike, but you can also connect with her on twitter. Remember, sharing is caring!
